The mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro has a mild climate and an especially cold and dry winter. Many showers from the coast lose strength as they move towards the mountains, no longer offering moisture to the region. The city of Nova Friburgo is situated in this area where excessive or lack of rain has serious consequences. This is how history shows us and it is for this reason that we are prepared to mitigate the consequences for the population and nature.
In 2011 our city went through the worst tragedy in history where hundreds of people lost their lives. And so we are offering this capability so that we can prevent forest fires from increasing the risk of landslides.
The Brazilian Red Cross – Nova Friburgo branch – in partnership with the State Environmental Institute (INEA-RJ) is training about 45 of its volunteers to fight forest fires. Such an initiative is necessary because the cold winter is accompanied by a high number of fires in the woods and mountains of our city. The fires cause damage to the fauna, flora, citizens and crops of Nova Friburgo, so we are organizing ourselves to serve this action further.
This Sunday (10/20/2019) will be trained the last volunteers of the total of 45.
