In 2011, the biggest climate tragedy occurred in Brazil and the city of Nova Friburgo had received its biggest impact. Hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands suffered impacts on many levels. Successive governments have been unable to meet the diverse demands of the affected population. In that chaotic scenario in 2011 the branch of the Brazilian Red Cross in Nova Friburgo was established. The city of Nova Friburgo is distributed between valleys and mountains. Most of the city is about 800m in altitude, with parts at 600m and others above 2000m. Such geography is rich in slopes, where many families build their homes. Flooding in rivers is always imminent and offers numerous risks. And in the dry season, fire is the greatest danger. Up against these challenges, Nova Friburgo branch of the Brazilian Red Cross, despite the scarcity of resources, offers courses with the goal of having training level cohesion among the body of volunteers. And since many regions of our city and its surroundings offer obstacles to access, rescue training in hard-to-reach areas is one of the most important skills for our volunteers
